Glass

Cups

We use these cups at home all through the day. In the morning they hold fresh orange juice and by dinnertime they wind up with the pudding or ice cream of the day happily supped from them. Peppermint candy, roasted peanuts, or freshly blended mayonnaise gets to the table quite easily in these glasses. Sometime, when none of us are looking, one of the cats takes a drink of milk from one. It seems that flavor is dramatically improved when things are consumed from thes glasses.

The variety of their form lends an individuality to them, ever reminding one of the familial nature of this style. There are many brothers and sisters, but no strangers or distant cousins, in a set of these.

They are the most popular of the work from Wauhatchie due to their value and limitless versatility.

Tall Iced Tea Glasses
colors shown: coral red #R69, parrot blue #91, lemon yellow #78
Tall Iced Tea

Tall iced tea is a response to the southern climate which requires long mid afternoon breaks resting under a shady tree. The use of slightly sweet, chilled teas and coffees gave rise to this form which holds the variation of shape and stand upedness as do other glasses in the studio. When one holds an empty tall iced tea glass to the ear, the sound is not so much of the seashore, but of the cool mountain stream to drink from and slow down by. These pieces are dishwasher safe, as always.

Wines

For dinner or dessert, these pieces work well as wine or juice glasses.

They arrived at Wauhatchie Glassworks as mistakes! They wanted to be champagne glasses when they grew up, but a cold morning in the studio prevented that. With a trim of the lip they became a small wine glass, easy to hold, attractive to use, and friendly to the touch.

These pieces have proven wildly popular since their introduction to the world at the American Crafts Council Show in Charlotte N.C. during December 1998.

They have proven to be a lasting part of the home and are available in all 12 colors.

Flute Glasses

Flute

Champagne tastes wonderful out these flutes, even if the source was soda water or grape juice.

In the Spring, one usually gets swiped from the cabinet to hold a fresh bouquet of flowers that Chloe has picked from the garden.

Prentice likes to keep the height of the flute pretty consistant so that when they are together they give the impression of a stand of full bulbed flowers.

These pieces tend to be chosen as toasting glasses at weddings due to the beauty and elegance they impart.

Dimensions: Height... 9"approx. Cup diameter... 21/2"approx. Capacity... 11 oz.

Stem Glasses

Stem

The goblet is a curious form in its own right with a cup that could be just fine on the table and yet there's this elegant stem which holds it elevated above the surface. These pieces take this process to a unique level as the stem which is singular at the foot splits into two before reaching the cup. It craddles the cup in a gesture that varies from piece to piece, yet still maintains a link with the style that make these signature elements of Prentice's work.

One way he has chosen to highlight the form of these stems is to sandblast stem and foot on particular pieces that show the gesture they impart so fluidly. The look changes dramatically with the form of the stem now shown rather than highlighted with the natural clarity and reflectivity of clear glass.

On a historical note, this work originated during Prentice's college career as clay goblets with only the interior of the cup glazed. The pieces were Raku, fired and then reduced in sawdust leaving the pieces a charcoal-grey to black. When he took Glass as an elective, he transferred the idea to the new medium. The goblet has been an interest and focus of his craft work since that time.

Pendant Light

The pendant light is an incandescent fixture with a compact fluorescent bulb. The bulb holder is a CNC machined aluminum part made for Wauhatchie Glassworks. The bulb holder is threaded at its top to accept an industrial wire mesh "strain relief" as the cord grip. At its bottom is standard 120V porcelain lamp socket. Cord is poly plastic for uv protection and to ensure longevity. Cord top is ready for electrician to secure to single hole cover for ceiling box with a strain relief provided to fasten lamp cord to the ceiling box. The strain relief will work as well on a curved ceiling where a ceiling box is provided. Lamps are made to order, with color available in opaque hues only. Lamp wattage is not to exceed 25 watts in compact fluorescent and standard incandescent bulbs are not usable due to heat issues.
